EU's EES and ETIAS Systems Launch for Schengen Area in 2026

The EU's new EES and ETIAS border systems, automating entry/exit for non-EU/Schengen visitors, are fully operational from 2026.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace manual passport stamping, electronically recording border crossings and biometric data for third-country nationals, including facial images and fingerprints for visitors over 12. This system, operational from 10 April 2026, applies to all short-stay visitors from outside the EU and Schengen area, up to 90 days, excluding long-stay visa holders and nationals of Andorra, San Marino, Monaco, and the Holy See. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will become a mandatory online authorisation for visa-exempt travellers from 59 countries, incurring a €20 fee per application, with exemptions for those under 18, over 70, and certain family members. Expected to launch in the final quarter of 2026, the ETIAS authorisation will be valid for multiple entries over three years, allowing stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
