Japan Fully Reopens: Visa-Free Travel Restored, All COVID-19 Protocols Lifted

Japan has fully reopened for visa-free, independent travel to most nationalities, with all COVID-19 entry protocols and mask recommendations now removed.

Visa-free, independent travel to Japan for citizens of 68 countries recommenced on 11 October 2023. Eligible travellers now receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival, eliminating the need to apply in advance. Furthermore, the indoor masking recommendation was officially dropped across the country on 13 March 2023, removing the last major COVID-19 related guideline. There are no new fees associated with these changes.
