South Africa Launches Electronic Travel Authorisation to Boost Tourism
South Africa has launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to streamline entry for eligible tourists, boosting its tourism economy.
The new digital authorisation permits eligible travellers from visa-required countries to visit South Africa for tourism or visitor purposes without a traditional visa. Visa-exempt individuals can also apply for the system, which allows for more efficient border processing upon entry. Linked to an individual's passport, it facilitates multiple entries within its validity, though it does not permit extended stays or employment within the country. The system, actively rolling out by May 2026, processes authorised travellers at airports in under 60 seconds via dedicated lanes. Ordinary passport holders may also apply for an e-Visa online if arriving at O.R. Tambo, Cape Town, or Lanseria International Airports.
