US Citizens Abroad: Use US Passport for US Entry, ESTA Invalid for Dual Nationals

U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport for U.S. entry; ESTA is invalid for dual national U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Mission in Spain issued this reminder on 12 June 2026, effective from 15 June 2026. This directive applies to all U.S. citizens who hold another nationality, including children. The Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) applications for such dual national U.S. citizens. United States citizens are also ineligible to apply for a U.S. visa for entry. Those living abroad are advised to ensure their U.S. passport is valid and renewed before any planned travel to the United States.
